About Us

Jeanette and John Cuthbertson welcome you to browse their web site.

This website is devoted to dahlia enthusiasts and they hope this also helps exhibitors as well as the general gardener.  All dahlias thrive well in most gardens, producing plenty of flowers for about 4 months of the year.

Jeanette and John have been growing dahlias for about 30 years and showing for more than 20 years.

Their aunty, who was very active in the Invercargill Horticulture Society gave them their first dahlia tubers.  A very good friend of theirs boasted about his successes at show level, which encouraged John to show and prove that he could “beat the man”

After moving to the Mid Canterbury area they visited a show in Christchurch where they were encouraged to attend one of the meetings and learn more.  This they did.  The next year they went to a tuber sale and picked up about 40 tubers which enabled them to participate in most classes.

Jeanette and John's first National Show was in 1992 at Greymouth where they had a local couple for competition.  They have had good success with vases on the Premier table. They have also taken out Champion of Champion, mostly at local level.

They attended and showed at a combined show in Ashburton, a rural town between Christchurch and Timaru, during the show visitors asked if they would like to see a circle formed in Ashburton. The results were positive and the Ashburton Dahlia Circle was formed in 1993.

They are also members of Canterbury Dahlia Circle, Dunedin Dahlia Circle, South Canterbury Dahlia Circle and the Timaru Dahlia Circle.

Moving 8 years ago to their ½ acre property in Hinds (14 kms south of Ashburton) where they grow about 1,500 dahlias with approximately 480 different varieties.

They have tried their hand at raising new varieties, their prefix being Joal. 'Joal Louisa', a white waterlily exhibition, and for the garden 'Joal Kaitlyn' and 'Joal Georgia Joal Emma  Joal Ariel  Joal Pyper  Joal Evie   Joa Harper.
